Why do I need an Audio Interface?

Although Bonza includes software monitoring, any audio monitored through a computer must be processed first, which introduces a small amount of delay. An audio interface allows direct (hardware) monitoring, meaning you hear your microphone or instrument straight from the input, before it passes through Bonza or your computer. This removes monitoring latency and makes playing and singing feel immediate and natural.

Are audio interfaces required?

An audio interface is not required to use Bonza. You can join sessions and make sound using built-in audio devices.

However, not using an audio interface will affect the experience. Monitoring audio through software always introduces some delay, which can make playing or singing feel less immediate.

Bonza includes a software direct monitor as a fallback, but this is intended as a backup option, not a replacement for hardware monitoring. For the most responsive and natural feel, monitoring directly through an audio interface is strongly recommended.

Controlling your monitoring levels

When using an audio interface, monitoring levels are typically controlled via the interface’s own control panel or physical controls. These tools vary by manufacturer and model, and are separate from Bonza’s in-app controls.

If you’re unsure where to adjust these settings:

  • Check your interface’s control software or front-panel knobs

  • Refer to the manufacturer’s documentation

  • Or reach out to us - we’re happy to help you find the right controls for your specific interface
